CrosStar ATU Advance Telemetry Unit

CrosStar’s ATU Advance Telemetry Unit provides advance telemetry and control for water and wastewater systems. The design of the ATU incorporates state of the art technologies in manufacturing, communications, controls, and serviceability. With its modular design, the ATU can be cost effective as a simple Water Tank remote or scaled up to handle the complex control of sequenced filtration processes.

An ATU Advance Telemetry Unit is made up of individual modules that plug together to form the desired control and telemetry unit. A complete assembly is comprised of several types of modules according to the needs of a particular station. Module types available are several CPU processor units, digital inputs, digital outputs, RS232 or RS485 serial channels, analog input/outputs, several power supplies, modems, network, and radio modules. All modules used in the ATU have automatic addressing thus simplifying setup when adding or changing types. No switches, jumpers or pots need to be adjusted on any module in order to make it function. This includes analog modules, which are scaled automatically to the previous values upon replacement. Up to 18 input/output modules and up to 4 modem/serial/radio/network modules can be assembled as one ATU.

Description

The ATU Advance Telemetry Unit has an integral power supply with built-in battery charger and bump-less power fail battery switch over circuitry. The power supply uses standard 115 volts AC, and provide the requirements of the ATU, plus supply both +12 Vdc and +24 Vdc power for other low voltage cabinet mounted equipment, including the telemetry radio transceiver. The battery charger is designed to provide rapid recharging and maintenance float charging of gel-cell type batteries. Power failure, low battery voltage, and failing battery conditions are monitored by the Power Supply and these alarm signals are passed to the CPU. The Power Supply detects a failing battery by measuring the battery discharge decay rate on a routine basis.

Several versions of the CPU module are available to match the control needs of the system. All the CPU modules have integrated real-time clocks and store the communication and control configuration in Flash EPROM. Over 30 different control tag types are available allowing very complex control schemes to be created easily and quickly using CrosStar's Window's based ATU Advocate Software.

Digital Input modules are available in several styles including low voltage self-powered dry contact style and 24/115 Volt AC coil style. All digital input modules have individual status indicating lights, and are configurable as momentary (latched) input. Also most of the Digital Input modules have input points which can be configurable as high-speed pulse inputs to interface with pulse output style instruments such as flow meters, rain gauges and wind meters.

Digital Output modules are available as either low voltage transistor style, or 12-115 volt 10 amp isolated relay dry contact style. Output commands to the Digital Outputs use a "select, check, operate" sequence to verify the integrity of each output point constantly. Also each Digital Output can be configured with the Alarm Flash option which operates with the internal Alarm Horn and Silence/ Acknowledge signals to greatly simplify alarm annunciations.

Analog Inputs on the ATU are available for both 0-5 V and 4-20mA current loop. Each analog input connection is supplied with battery backed up +24 VDC allowing loop-powered transducers to be easily connected. Each analog is converted and scaled to an IEEE-754 32-bit floating point number.

An ATU can have up to four communication channels providing interface to a host of intelligent equipment and protocols. Available communication modules include RS-232, RS-485, Lease-Line/Radio and POTS Dialup Modems, Spread Spectrum Radios, 100/10Base-T and WiFi Networking, and Cellular Radio. Protocols include Modicon's Modbus, Allen-Bradly DF-1, Aquatrol W1500 Telemetry, HDLC, and CrosStar's Smart™ protocol.

The standard communication system used by the ATU is CrosStar's Smart™ Telemetry System employing Auto Repeat Message Routing and Message Packing to make efficient use of the radio channel, which lowers power consumption and decreases the scan time of the system. The Smart™ Telemetry System, when necessary, automatically determines the best repeat path to every telemetry remote unit, and constantly updates this information. Every ATU has the ability to repeat messages as needed using a message packing system with the ability to store messages from several others remote sites, then send them all to the telemetry central in one transmission.
